“St. Bruno, also called Boniface, an archbishop and
monk, killed by the heathen on the border between Russia
and Lithuania in the eleventh year of his conversion,
was taken to heaven together with eighteen others on 9
March.”
This description of the martyrdom of St Bruno of Querfurt (c.
974–1009) comes from the Annals of Quedlinburg and is the first
mention of Lithuania’s name in a historical source.
