President
Valdas Adamkus met with the Lithuanian community in New
York
On September 26, 2007
President of the Republic of
Lithuania
Valdas Adamkus
met with the Lithuanian community in New York.
Ms. Ramutė Zukas, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian American Community of New
York thanked President Adamkus for his concern for and support to the preservation of the Lithuanian national identity and for his support to keep Our Lady of Vilnius Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan from being closed down.
Speaking to the members of the community, Valdas Adamkus shared impressions from his meetings and informal talks with heads of state at the UN General Assembly, underlining that it was good to know that Lithuania’s achievements were highly valued in the world.
“We are a model to be followed by other countries walking down the path of democratic reforms. In a period of seventeen years, together with the young generation, we have achieved things that took other countries long decades to accomplish,” said Mr. Adamkus. “It shows that our nation has a huge potential and that we have many decent, honest, and industrious people.”
“I believe that Lithuania will establish itself among the ten best countries of the EU,” said Mr. Adamkus.
Valdas Adamkus noted that although people in Lithuania were often disappointed by various kinds of political tension, unfulfilled promises, and unresolved social problems, quality of life is constantly improving.
With respect to the emigration phenomenon, President Adamkus expressed hope that most of those who had left Lithuania would eventually find their way back home.
“We have to build together a life which would make all of us feel good in Lithuania so that we do not have to leave our homeland and live abroad,” said Mr. Adamkus.
Members of the Lithuanian community of New York wanted to know President Adamkus’ opinion on double citizenship and inquired about the prospects for its legalization in the near future. They were interested in ways of preserving the Lithuanian cultural heritage created or collected abroad, the law and order system in Lithuania and the possibilities of transmitting Lithuanian TV broadcasts to the United States.
