Residence Permits


An alien intending to live in Lithuania for a period exceeding three months in any calendar half-year from the first day of entry into the Republic of Lithuania or intending to work or engage in other lawful activities in the Republic of Lithuania must obtain:

  • The permanent residence permit;

  • The temporary residence permit;

  • National visa "D".


Grounds for issuance of a temporary residence permit

The application for the temporary residency permit has to be submitted in person to the Consulate General or the migration office in Lithuania.

The permit is usually issued for one year.

The travel document of the applicant has to be valid for at least three months after the expiration date of the temporary residence permit.

All documents have to be translated into Lithuanian.

A temporary residence permit may be issued or replaced to an alien if:

  • The alien has retained his right to citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania in the manner prescribed by the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania ;

  • The alien is a person of Lithuanian descent;

  • Is a case of family reunification;

  • The alien intends to take up employment in the Republic of Lithuania;

  • The alien intends to engage in lawful activities in the Republic of Lithuania;

  • The alien intends to get access to education, to study at an educational establishment, to participate in internship, training, to take part in vocational training;

  • The alien has been put under guardianship/curatorship or has been appointed guardian/curator;

  • The alien may not be expelled from the Republic of Lithuania according to the procedure established by this Law or his expulsion from the Republic of Lithuania has been postponed according to the procedure established in Article 132 of this Law;

  • The alien has been granted subsidiary protection in the Republic of Lithuania in the manner prescribed by this Law;

  • The alien has been granted temporary protection in the Republic of Lithuania in the manner prescribed by this Law;

  • The alien is unable to leave because he is in a dangerous state of health and needs immediate emergency medical aid. The list of such states of health shall be drawn up by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Lithuania;

  • He shall be allowed to remain in the Republic of Lithuania as he is or has been a victim of human trafficking and cooperates with the pre-trial investigation body or with the court in the fight against trafficking in human beings or in combating the offences of trafficking in human beings. The provision shall be applied only to adult aliens;

  • He intends to carry out research and/or experimental development works as the researcher under employment contract concluded with the research institution registered in the Republic of Lithuania.

The application has to be process by the Migration Department within 6 months from the day the application was submitted.


Documents to be submitted for issuance of a temporary residence permit if the alien intends to take up employment in the Republic of Lithuania:

  • Application form;

  • One passport photo;

  • Passport (or other valid travel document) and its copy;

  • The permit to work in Lithuania and the letter from the employer ("tarpininkavimo raštas") or the letter from local labor exchange certifying that it received the application for the work permit. In latter situation, the work permit has to be presented to the Migration Department no later than the end of the term of the evaluation of the application;

  • Document proving sufficient funds (800 litas per month) to reside in Lithuania;

  • Document proving availability of accommodation for an alien during the period of temporary residence (lease agreement, real estate ownership documents, written commitment of a resident of Lithuania or a legal entity to provide accommodation);

  • Health insurance. If the alien does not intend to arrive to Lithuania before the the application is evaluated, the health insurance can be presented to the Migration Department in Lithuania;

  • Consular fee.


Documents to be submitted for issuance of a temporary residence permit if the alien intends to get access to education/ to study at an educational establishment:

  • Application form;

  • One passport photo;

  • Passport (or other valid travel document) and its copy;

  • The documents proving that the alien has been enrolled as a full-time student at a higher educational establishment, the letter from the institution ("tarpininkavimo raštas") and the parental consent fro the minor; or the documents proving that the alien has been enrolled as a secondary school pupil, the letter from the institution ("tarpininkavimo raštas") and the parental consent fro the minor;

  • Document proving sufficient funds (800 litas per month) to reside in Lithuania;

  • Document proving availability of accommodation for an alien during the period of temporary residence (lease agreement, real estate ownership documents, written commitment of a resident of Lithuania or a legal entity to provide accommodation);

  • Health insurance. If the alien does not intend to arrive to Lithuania before the the application is evaluated, the health insurance can be presented to the Migration Department in Lithuania;

  • Consular fee.


Documents to be submitted for issuance of a temporary residence permit if the alien intends to carry out research and/or experimental development works as the researcher under employment contract concluded with the research institution registered in the Republic of Lithuania:

  • Application form;

  • One passport photo;

  • Passport (or other valid travel document) and its copy;

  • The employment contract, the registration document of scientific research institution in Lithuania, the letter from the institution ("tarpininkavimo raštas") and the written letter valid for 6 months after the end of the contract, stating that if the alien stays in Lithuanian illegally, the institution will compensate all State expenses of deportation and illegal residence;

  • Document proving sufficient funds (800 litas per month) to reside in Lithuania;

  • Document proving availability of accommodation for an alien during the period of temporary residence (lease agreement, real estate ownership documents, written commitment of a resident of Lithuania or a legal entity to provide accommodation);

  • Health insurance. If the alien does not intend to arrive to Lithuania before the the application is evaluated, the health insurance can be presented to the Migration Department in Lithuania;

  • Consular fee.
